If I’ve learned anything recently it’s that if you’re going to live in the mid-west and run a photography business you’d better be able to mix it up sometimes. I consider myself a “natural light” photographer – or at least that’s my preference – but when you’re shooting an engagement session in January you need to be able to do other things.  It was nasty outside the day we shot Kristen & Jerad’s engagement session but I think we still ended up with some killer images, and we had a great time doing it.

We spent a ton of time outside so after a while we went inside and tried out a few different shots. These were just for fun but still pretty cool.

Shaun Menary: Freaking awesome man! I'm so proud.

Alyssa Schroeder: May be a gloomy day, but a very happy couple! Fun photos, the soft light is great!

Here we go again. Just doing a little back blogging. I shot Matthew and Alex’s engagement photos a few months ago. They were an awesome couple to work with. They started the session, as most clients do, with the standard “we’re not very good at taking pictures.” Which as you can see was a blatant lie. But they have been forgiven and I can’t wait to shoot their wedding. Here are a few of my favorites.

So way back, Angie came across some of my portrait work on a friend’s desk at her office. It just so happened that she was engaged and was looking for a photographer. It also just so happened I was starting my wedding business. It was serendipity at its best. (yes I had to look up the definition) The crazy thing was, she was planning way in advance. So even though she was the first to take a chance on me, it ended up that I shot a bagillion weddings before hers. All that to say, she took a gamble and it paid off by getting an experienced wedding photographer for the price of a newbie.

Angie and Patrick got married at the amazing Magnolia Hotel in downtown Omaha. This is one of, if not my favorite, venues in town. I always love it when the ceremony and reception are in the same place (it makes my job a lot easier). Here at the Magnolia there is no need for compromise to make that happen. The courtyard is amazing, the ballroom is fabulous, and the catering is top notch. If you’re looking for a venue I highly recommend it. I also recommend that if you choose the Magnolia then you should hire us to do your photography. I’m just sayin’…

Personal note to Angie & Patrick – I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. You guys had a lot of faith in me and I will never forget that. Also, thanks so much for continuing to refer your friends to me. That’s the biggest compliment I could ever ask for.

Emily Fuhs: These pictures are amazing. So beautiful, so happy, so perfect. Simply cannot wait for you to do my wedding!

Christina: So diggin' how your work is growing and changing... LOVE IT!

Ryan and Christine’s session was a long time ago, but since we have finally hit the off season, I figure it is time to do some back blogging. They are having a February wedding, so here’s to hopping for a sunny, 70 degree wedding day!

I have been looking forward to posting these since the day I shot them. Pat and Angie’s wedding was this Friday so I am finally in the clear and can share these images with you. These were done as kind of a test shoot for me. Bridal sessions are not nearly as popular in the mid-west as they are down south, but I really enjoy them and would love to do more of them. I told Angie I would be happy to give her a free bridal session if she would allow me to experiment a little with lighting and posing and she was totally up for it. So we headed down to the awesome Magnolia Hotel in downtown Omaha, and I went for a “high fashion” feel. Here’s what we got.

And we had to throw in some good old natural light stuff out in the courtyard. This is also where the wedding was held. Look for that post coming soon.

Shaun Menary: This session is 'off the chain' as the kids say. Seriously fantastic!

How lucky are you that you get to check out two posts in one… You’re welcome.

Back in June I had the opportunity to head up to Chicago to shoot Kate and Jarod’s engagement photos. They were such a blast to work with, plus Chicago is one of my favorite cities on earth. Here are some shots from their session in Chicago.

After our time together in Chi-town I was very excited to be a part of their wedding day. Here are some of my favorites from their very bright and colorful wedding at the Sunken Gardens in Lincoln.

This last one is just a little different take on the same location. I really enjoy interjecting a few shots that are just a touch different. This one happens to be my favorite of the day.

Christina: I am always up, and these images are rockin'! Great work as always!

Kate: I LOVE THESE PHOTOS!!!!! Matt captured the moment perfectly. Thanks!

Anna Carson: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. They are great Matt and I have enjoyed catching up on all your busy-ness! :) Hope you are well!

Mike: Absolutely awesome work, AGAIN! I love all the colors, cropping, etc. Great job!

It has been a long time since I have blogged a session on the same night as the session. But lets just say, I had an iced venti vanilla latte a little too late tonight. So while I was backing up this session I grabbed a few of my favorites to put a little blog post together. These two were great to work with tonight and I can’t wait to shoot their wedding in a couple weeks. Enjoy…

Kameron: Matt, I like the picture with the sun flare - it's the perfect illustration of "heart and soul."

Nick Kelly: I need to take a Paddack workshop!

Mike: I agree with Kameron - nice "natural" touch - very creative. Excellent job on these!

Its been quite a while since I shot Angie and Patrick’s engagement session, but we are coming up on their wedding so I figured it was time to post this session. From the very beginning of the evening they were very adamant that they were “not very good at taking pictures”. This turned out to be very untrue. In fact they were one of the most laid back, free flowing couples I have shot in a while. We started in a nice grassy field then made our way downtown for a little bit of a different feel. We ended the night with some drinks at my favorite sushi bar in town, Blue Sushi.

Cara: Gorgeous light, beautiful location, and a stunning couple. Great job Matt! Love the off camera lighting too! You've been rocking that lately. :)

stephen Hunton: great stuff! love the field!

Kameron: That last picture's got to be upstairs at Blue Sushi. I always thought that would be a killer location to do an engagement shoot.

Kameron: Of course I would figured that out if I had read the post first; I guess that nixes my first comment... Let me try again. I'm really drawn to the color street shot - something about the harsh shadows from the couple and the soft headlights in the background... I really enjoy looking at it.

Lain: Number to is a dream. I especially love it!

Lain: Number two is a dream. I especially love it!

Christina: love this session... you rock!

Shaun Menary: Great shoot man! That's some mighty fine off camera flash work going on there.

Thats right people! 2 blog posts in one day… I know its crazy but true. This one comes to you from the great city of Chicago. In June I was heading to Chicago to shoot an engagement session for one of my awesome couples, Kate + Jarod (which I will post soon), so while I was there I begged the amazing Jessica Claire to let me second shoot for her at a wedding she was shooting there the same weekend. Head over to her blog to see some more images from this wedding. I don’t normally post weddings that I second shoot at, but its not every day you get to shoot in venues like this or with photographers like Jessica. So I hope you enjoy!

This next shot is a little soft, but I just love the look between these two right before they walk down the aisle.

They catered in White Castle for a late night snack. If you’ve never had White Castle… consider yourself very luck. But it makes for some fun photos.
